Melissa Mitchell, WHNP-BC

Dr. Mitchell received her nursing degree from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in 2011 and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner degree from University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2018.

Melissa is a board certified women’s health nurse practitioner, which means she has advanced academic and clinical training that has prepared her to provide care for a woman along her lifespan. Working in collaboration with Dr. Durham, Melissa provides high-quality, individualized care for her patient’s needs.

“Gynecology” refers to a woman’s general health care, and “obstetrics” is care for pregnancy. As a women’s health nurse practitioner in an OBGYN Alton IL office, Melissa helps her patients choose the healthcare and family-planning options that make sense for them on an individual basis.

An important part of healthcare is preventive medicine. Melissa performs regular checkups, which include annual pelvic exams, Pap smears, breast exams and mammograms when appropriate-to aid in early detection of potential problems. She also cares for women who experience health problems and performs several procedures in office. Melissa orders and interprets lab studies and imaging when indicated for care. She refers patients to Dr. Durham for surgical interventions or when appropriate.

An informed patient is a more satisfied patient.

Educating patients is an important part of the AMS philosophy. This means explaining your treatment in detail, providing you with literature on your illness or treatment, and generally making certain that you understand the care that is prescribed for you.
